Rocking Horses
Rocking Horses
A timeless classic which has endured since the ancient Egyptians’ first made them for their children, the rocking horse has evolved with the times to reflect the needs of children as well as building techniques. Many types of rocking horses are available to satisfy even the most picky of children, as well as the most picky adult collector.
The traditional rocking horse is made out of wood. These vary in price due to the workmanship and age of the horse. While some wooden rocking horses are pine or lime wood, and replicas of antiques, they can be quite expensive. A 17th-century rocking horse owned by Charles I was purchased by the V&A Museum of Childhood, its price was £4.7m ($7.5m).
Others, which are varnished and not hand painted, can be affordable and passed down from generation to generation. Wooden rocking horses come in a variety of sizes, with horses sitting closer to the ground for small children, and taller horses for older children.
There are also carousel rocking horses which are either handmade by an artisan by combing an actual carousel horse and rocker, or a reproduction. Intricate painting, materials used, and age of the carousel horse can make them expensive, but a good investment for any avid collector. As with any rocking horse, it is important to consider the size of the carousel horse when buying one, they can be large and adequate space is required for proper display.
The spring rocking horse is another great option in a rocking horse, especially for the younger crowd. While movement is more of a bounce than a rock, these rocking horses are typically more affordable than their wooden counterparts. Made from wood or plastic, this type of rocking horse is safer than the rocking horses, as their range of movement is limited. Spring rocking horses can also be found in a variety of plush options. This recent addition to the family of rocking horses increases safety, as well as options in style.
The array of rocking horses available may be over whelming, but the continued popularity of this classic is sure to make it a wonderful addition to anyone’s toy collection.
